OCT Home Maintenance Checklist

While our list is not quite as extensive as it is for folks up north, there are a few things we should do around the house to prepare for winter. haloween-logo
The first item on any monthly, or seasonal Home Maintenance Checklist should be to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace batteries as needed. Once that’s done…

  • Clean your dryer vent – both at the dryer connection & outside.
  • Have a professional check and clean your A/C system + replace the air filter.
  • Make sure the weather stripping and caulking around doors and windows is adequate to reduce heat/cooling loss.
  • Clean the rain gutters and downspouts.
  • Check the attic insulation – look for signs of moisture from roof leaks and nesting from vermin.
  • Clean Garbage Disposal – Pour half a box of baking soda down the drain, top off with vinegar & let it foam up. Allow the foam to settle, and repeat until all of the baking soda is gone. Allow the drain to sit unused for a while, then Run hot water down the drain before use.
  • Clean kitchen exhaust hood and filter.
  • Drain sediment from water heater.
  • Vacuum refrigerator coils – behind cardboard backing in the rear.
  • Trim trees and shrubs away from house.
  • Inspect wood decks for any nails or screws that may be popping up.
