Proposed Changes to FL Licenses

You may have heard about the proposed de-regulation of some specific Florida Licensing.

Interior designers, Boxing announcers and timekeepers, Auctioneers, & Talent agents are a few who will be affected.

Some of the current regulations are absolutely RIDICULOUS!

Interior designers need to pass a 3-part exam that costs over $1,000.

Boxing announcers and time keepers… auctioneers? Why do those folks even need a license at all?

However, one of the proposed changes has to do with Home Inspectors.

On the surface it may seem reasonable. The proposed change would allow Home Inspectors from other states to receive a FL License without taking a FL Home Inspectors Course or passing an exam. Reciprocity makes sense, right? What’s the big deal? Well, I will admit that what we do is not Rocket Science. However, what about the 20+ states that don’t require a license at all, or those who have very minimal requirements like GED, criminal background check & a few license fees?

Without experience in FL, Home Inspectors from up north who are used to seeing furnaces will likely have trouble with our A/C systems. Pools may be completely foreign to them. Seawalls, docks, & boat lifts are a little different down here. Several types of pests we see here in FL aren’t found up north, etc. Additionally, we’ve got several different types of Home Inspections down here that are unique to Florida. Four Point Insurance Inspections, Mobile Home Foundation Certifications, etc. aren’t something that one can pick up overnight. But, leading the pack is our Wind Mitigation Inspection. Even WITH 10 years of experience here IN Florida, my Continuing Education requirements include a Wind Mitigation Course every 2 years.

So, yea, I’m all for government cutting back on how much they interfere with what we do & how we do it. But in this case, handing over a FL Home Inspector License to someone from up north just because they did a few home inspections in some other state, really is not a good idea!
